New Geographies of Health

Research in New Geographies of Health uses modern methods to provide value-added data for critical indicators in multiple geographies that are of public policy relevance. We seek to promote evidence-based policy deliberation, formulation and action with a comprehensive online geo-visual data platform for health, wellbeing and population indicators for understudied geographic sectors that are becoming increasingly more important. In particular, an initial focus is on the geography of congressional districts.

Life expectancies across congressional districts in the United States

Health data on the congressional district level align with the interests of Members of Congress, who have the power to shape federal health policies. Researchers at the Geographic Insights Lab (GIL) present life expectancy metrics at the congressional district level in the interactive dashboard below. This allows Members of Congress and their constituents to further understand the state of health within their communities.

Additionally, the GIL have collaborated with the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, in partnership with and support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to create the Congressional District Health Dashboard. The dashboard provides actionable measures of health and its drivers calculated at the congressional district level, showing users how their district is doing on health outcomes, social and economic factors, and more.
